# Choose a template design

> Pick one of 10 ready-made invoice designs and make it your invoice template.

Use this guide if you want a different look for your invoices. By the end, you'll have a new template built from the design you picked, and your customers' invoices will use it once you set it as the default.

## Before you begin

- Picking a design creates a **new** template. It doesn't change the template your invoices use now, so you can try a design safely.
- A new template starts with that design's settings. Your logo, labels and the items you show or hide are set per template, so add them again in the new template. Your business details are shared by all templates and carry over.
- Designs are for invoices, quotes and credit notes. Packing slips keep their own packing slip template.
- All designs are available on every plan.

## Choose your setup

Each design card shows a preview with your own store name and address.

| Design | Looks like |
|---|---|
| **Standard** | Clean layout with the header on the right and a bordered totals box. |
| **Classic** | Formal layout with detailed sections, suited to B2B and accounting. |
| **Modern** | A colored banner across the top and a colored totals strip. |
| **Minimal** | Plain type, lots of space and thin dividing lines. |
| **Compact** | Tight spacing that fits more items on each page. |
| **Elegant** | A centered serif letterhead for a premium, boutique feel. |
| **Bold** | A full-width colored header, large type and a strong total. |
| **Corporate** | Boxed sections in a clear grid, for a formal B2B look. |
| **Sidebar** | Your details and order info in a colored column on the left, items on the right. |
| **Striped** | Alternating row shading so long item lists are easy to read. |

## What customers will see

Nothing changes for customers until you make the new template the default. After that, every invoice they receive, print or download uses the new design, including invoices for older orders the next time they are sent or downloaded.

## Set it up

1. Open your Shopify admin and click **Invoice Falcon** in the left menu.
2. Click **Templates** in the app's menu.
3. Click **Create template**. The **Choose a design** page opens.
4. Optional: click **Preview** on a design to see it full size, then click **Close**.
5. Click **Use this design** on the design you want. The new template opens, named after the design.
6. Click **Open visual editor** and add your logo, color and the details you want to show. See [Customize a template in the visual editor](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/customize-a-template/).
7. Click **Save changes** in the bar at the top of the editor, then close the editor with the **X** at the top.
8. In the **General settings** section, click **Edit**, tick **Orders** under **Default for**, and click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

To use the design for quotes or credit notes too, tick **Draft orders** or **Credit notes** in step 8. See [Rename a template and set a default](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/set-a-default-template/).

## Check your setup

1. Click **Templates** in the app's menu. The new template shows **Orders** in the **Default for** column.
2. Open an order from **Orders**, click **Actions**, then click **Print**. The invoice uses the new design.

## Troubleshooting

### Preview unavailable on a design card

The thumbnail couldn't be drawn. You can still click **Use this design**, then check the result in the template's **Preview** tab.

### That design could not be applied

The template wasn't created. Click **Use this design** again. If it keeps failing, reload the page and try once more.

### My invoices still use the old design

A new template isn't the default for anything until you set it. Tick **Orders** under **Default for** on the new template and click **Save**.

### The new template has no logo

Logos belong to each template. Open the visual editor on the new template, click **Logo** in the sidebar, and upload it. See [Add your logo, colors and fonts](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/add-your-logo-and-branding/).

### The template name has a number in brackets

You already have a template with that design's name, so a number such as **(1)** is added. Rename it in **General settings**.

## FAQ

### Can I switch the design of my current template?

No. Create a new template from the design, set it up, then make it the default. Your old template stays in the list until you delete it.

### Will the new design change invoices I already sent?

Only once you make it the default. From then on, older invoices use the new design the next time they are printed, downloaded or sent. Their numbers and order details don't change.

### Can I change the colors of a design?

Yes. Each design starts with its own accent color. Change it under **Color** in the visual editor.

### Can I use a design for packing slips?

No. Packing slips use your packing slip template. See [Print packing slips](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/print-packing-slips/).

### Can I build my own design?

Yes. Start from the closest design and change its HTML and Liquid code. See [Edit a template's HTML and Liquid code](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/edit-template-html-and-liquid/).
