# Get started with Invoice Falcon

> Set up Invoice Falcon from install to automatic invoices, one step at a time.

Use this guide to set up Invoice Falcon from start to finish. By the end, your invoices carry your design, logo and business details, and every new order's invoice reaches the customer by email without you lifting a finger.

## Before you begin

- You need to be able to install apps in your Shopify admin.
- Have your logo file ready (an image up to 500KB), plus your business name, address and tax number if you want them on invoices.
- Automatic sending only covers orders placed after you turn it on. Older orders can be sent in bulk later.

## Set it up

### Step 1: Install and open the app

1. Install Invoice Falcon from the Shopify App Store.
2. Open your Shopify admin and click **Invoice Falcon** in the left menu.
3. On the **Welcome to Invoice Falcon** screen, check the language button in the top-right corner. To change the language of your invoices and invoice emails, click it and pick a language.
4. Click **Get started**.

See [What to do after installing Invoice Falcon](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/after-installing-invoice-falcon/) for more on these screens.

### Step 2: Pick a plan

1. On the **Plans** page, click **Start for free** on the **Free** card, or **Start free trial** on the **Pro** card.
2. If you picked Pro, click **Approve** on Shopify's charge approval page.

The **Orders** page opens, with the **Get set up on Invoice Falcon** checklist at the top. The next steps follow that checklist. See [Invoice Falcon pricing and plans](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/pricing-and-plans/) to compare the plans.

### Step 3: Pick a template design

1. In the checklist, click **Pick your invoice template**, then click **Browse designs**. If you don't see the checklist, click **Templates** in the app's menu, then click **Create template**.
2. On the **Choose a design** page, click **Preview** on a design to see it full size.
3. Click **Use this design**.

The design becomes a new template and its editor opens. If you started from the checklist, it's also your default template for orders. Otherwise, set it as the default yourself. See [Choose a template design](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/choose-a-template-design/) and [Rename a template and set a default](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/set-a-default-template/).

### Step 4: Add your logo, colors and business details

1. On the template's page, click **Open visual editor**. From the checklist, click **Customize your invoice template**, then **Customize template**.
2. In the editor's sidebar, under **Style**, click **Logo** and upload your logo. Click the back arrow to return to the list.
3. Under **Style**, click **Color** and pick your brand color. Click the back arrow.
4. Under **Content**, click **Business details** and fill in your business name, address, tax registration number and contact details. Leave a field empty to use your Shopify store details.
5. Click **Save changes** at the top of the editor.

Business details are shared by all your templates, so you only enter them once. See [Add your logo, colors and fonts](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/add-your-logo-and-branding/), [Add your business details](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/add-your-business-details/) and [Customize a template in the visual editor](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/customize-a-template/).

### Step 5: Create a test order

1. In Shopify, create an order using your own email address as the customer. If your store has no orders yet, click **Create a test order** on the empty **Orders** page in Invoice Falcon to open Shopify's new order screen.
2. In Invoice Falcon, click **Orders** in the app's menu.
3. Click the order number to open the order. Invoice Falcon creates its invoice and shows a preview.

See [When Invoice Falcon creates an invoice](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/when-invoices-are-created/) for what happens when you open an order.

### Step 6: Print and email the invoice

1. On the order page, open the **Actions** menu on the invoice and click **Print**. The invoice PDF opens in a new browser tab.
2. Click the **Send** menu at the top of the page, then click **Send email**.
3. In the **Send invoice email** dialog, check the address, then click **Send email**.

Check your inbox for the email and its PDF. See [Print or download an invoice](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/print-or-download-an-invoice/) and [Email an invoice to a customer](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/email-an-invoice/).

### Step 7: Turn on automatic sending

1. Click **Settings** in the app's menu. The **Emails** tab opens. From the checklist, click **Send invoices automatically**, then **Enable automation**.
2. In the **Invoice emails** section, click **Customize email**.
3. In the editor's sidebar, under **Sending**, click **Automatic invoices**.
4. Next to **Send invoices automatically**, click **Turn on**.
5. Click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

Every new order now gets its invoice by email. To send only once an order is paid or fulfilled, or only to some customers, see [Send invoices automatically](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/send-invoices-automatically/).

## What customers will see

An email from your store with the invoice attached as a PDF, in the design you picked, with your logo and business details. The sender address is `invoices@invoicefalcon.com` unless you [change the sender address](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/change-the-sender-address/), and replies go to your store email.

## Check your setup

1. Place one more test order with your own email address.
2. Wait a minute or two, then check your inbox for the invoice email.
3. In Invoice Falcon, open **Orders**. The order now shows an **Invoice #**, and its email icon is blue.

## Troubleshooting

### The invoice shows my Shopify address, not my business details

Open **Business details** in the visual editor, fill in the fields, and click **Save changes**. Empty fields always fall back to your Shopify store details.

### The invoice doesn't use the design I picked

The design isn't the default template for orders. Click **Templates** in the app's menu, click the button in the **Default for** column next to your template, and choose **Orders**. See [Rename a template and set a default](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/set-a-default-template/).

### My browser blocked the invoice tab

Click **Open invoice PDF** in the message that appears, or allow pop-ups for your Shopify admin.

### The test order didn't get an invoice email

Check that **Send invoices automatically** shows **On** in **Settings** on the **Emails** tab, and that the order has a customer email. Then see [Troubleshoot invoice emails](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/troubleshoot-invoice-emails/).

## FAQ

### Do I have to finish every step?

No. Only picking a plan is required. You can print and email invoices with the default template straight away, and come back to design and automation later.

### Will my existing orders get invoices emailed when I turn on automatic sending?

No. Only orders placed after you turn it on are sent. To send invoices for older orders, see [Email invoices in bulk](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/bulk-email-invoices/).

### Can I make quotes and packing slips too?

Yes. Draft orders get quotes, and every order can have a packing slip. See [Send quotes for draft orders](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/send-quotes-for-draft-orders/) and [Print packing slips](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/print-packing-slips/).

### Can customers download invoices themselves?

Yes. You can add a download link to Shopify's order confirmation email, or a download button to the customer account. See [Add an invoice link to the order confirmation email](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/invoice-link-in-order-confirmation-email/) and [Let customers download invoices from their account](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/customer-account-download-button/).

### Does testing count toward the Free plan's monthly limit?

Opening an order to preview its invoice doesn't count. Printing, downloading or emailing it does, once per order. See [How the monthly invoice limit works](https://help.invoicefalcon.com/monthly-invoice-limit/).
