Let customers pay with a Pay now link
Add a Pay now link to invoice PDFs and a Pay now button to invoice emails, so customers can pay an unpaid order.
Last updated
Use this guide if customers sometimes owe money on an order, for example orders paid by bank transfer, on payment terms, or from a quote. By the end, unpaid invoices will carry a link to Shopify’s own payment page, and when the customer pays, Shopify marks the order as paid.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- The Pay now link needs the Pro plan.
- The link only appears while the order has a balance to pay. Paid, refunded, voided and cancelled orders never show it.
- You don’t need a separate payment provider. The link opens Shopify’s payment page for that order.
Choose your setup
Section titled “Choose your setup”There are two separate settings. Turn on one or both.
| Use this | When |
|---|---|
| Pay now link on a template | You want the link printed on the invoice PDF, so it works wherever the PDF goes. |
| Pay now button in emails | You want a button in the email itself, under your message. |
What customers will see
Section titled “What customers will see”- On the PDF: a Pay now button in the totals area.
- In the email: a Pay now button after your message.
Clicking either one opens Shopify’s payment page for the amount still owed. Once the customer pays, Shopify marks the order as paid, and invoices you send or print after that no longer show the link.
For quotes sent from draft orders, the link opens Shopify’s checkout for that draft order, until the draft order is completed.
Add the link to the invoice PDF
Section titled “Add the link to the invoice PDF”- Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
- Click Templates in the app’s menu.
- Click the template your invoices use.
- In the Visual editor section, click Open visual editor.
- In the editor’s sidebar, under Content, click Order total information.
- Under Payment details, tick Pay now link.
- Click Save changes in the bar at the top of the editor.
The setting belongs to the template. If you use more than one template, for example one for quotes, turn it on in each one. To find which template your orders use, see Rename a template and set a default.
The editor’s preview uses a sample order, so it may not show a working link. Check it on a real unpaid order, as below.
Add the button to invoice emails
Section titled “Add the button to invoice emails”- Click Settings in the app’s menu. The Emails tab opens.
- In the Invoice emails section, click the Pay now button box. The email editor opens at Pay now button.
- Next to Pay now button, click Turn on.
- Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.
The Pay now button box on the Emails tab now shows “Shown while the order is unpaid”.
Place the link inside your own message
Section titled “Place the link inside your own message”If you write your own email text, you can put the link exactly where you want it with the {{payment_url}} variable.
- In the same editor’s sidebar, click Subject and message.
- Click Variables next to the Message label, then click Add to field next to
{{payment_url}}. - Move the variable to where you want the link in your message.
- Click Save.
{{payment_url}} is only filled in while the Pay now button is on and the order is unpaid. When your message already contains the link, the email doesn’t add a second Pay now button. See Customize your invoice emails.
Check your setup
Section titled “Check your setup”- In Shopify, create an order for yourself that isn’t paid yet, for example a draft order you complete with payment due later.
- In Invoice Falcon, open the order from Orders.
- Check the PDF preview for the Pay now link.
- Click Send > Send email, then click Send email to email it to yourself.
- In your inbox, click Pay now. Shopify’s payment page opens with the amount owed.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”The invoice doesn't show the Pay now link
Check these in order:
- The order still has a balance to pay. Paid, refunded, voided and cancelled orders don’t show it.
- Pay now link is ticked on the template this invoice uses, not only on another template.
- You saved the template with Save changes.
If the invoice was created before you turned the link on, print or send it again to get the link.
The email has no Pay now button
The Pay now button must be On in Settings > Emails, and the order must still be unpaid. If your message contains {{payment_url}}, the link is in your text instead of a separate button.
The Pay now options are greyed out
Both need the Pro plan. In the template editor, click Upgrade to Pro to add it under Pay now link. See Invoice Falcon pricing and plans.
Will the order be marked as paid after my customer pays?
Yes. The customer pays on Shopify’s own payment page, so Shopify records the payment and marks the order as paid. You don’t need to do anything.
Do I need Stripe or another payment provider?
No. The link uses Shopify’s payment page, with the payment methods your store already accepts.
Do my existing unpaid invoices get the link?
Yes, the next time you print or send them. Invoices already in your customers’ inboxes don’t change.
Can I add a Pay now link to quotes?
Yes. Turn on Pay now link in your quote template, and the email Pay now button also appears in quote emails. The link opens the draft order’s checkout until it’s completed.
What happens if I move to the Free plan?
The link and button stop appearing on invoices and emails straight away.
