How the monthly invoice limit works
What counts toward the Free plan's 50 orders a month, when it resets, and what happens when you reach it.
Last updated
Use this guide if you’re on the Free plan and want to know how many invoices you have left. The Free plan covers 50 orders and draft orders a month. This page explains what counts, when the count resets, and what stops when you reach it.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- The limit applies to the Free plan only. Pro and the Partner plan for development stores have no limit.
- Stores that installed before 8 July 2026 get Pro features on the Free plan, but the limit of 50 a month still applies to them.
How the count works
Section titled “How the count works”The limit counts orders, not documents. An order or draft order counts once in a month, the first time its document is:
- printed or downloaded, from the Orders page, the order page, or a bulk action;
- emailed, by you, in bulk, or by automatic sending;
- downloaded by your customer, from the link in Shopify’s order confirmation email or the button in their customer account.
These don’t count:
- Opening an order to preview its invoice.
- Printing, downloading or emailing the same order again. An invoice and a packing slip for the same order count as one.
- Anything you did while on Pro.
The count resets every month on the day of the month you installed Invoice Falcon, not on the 1st. If you installed on the 14th, it resets on the 14th.
See your usage
Section titled “See your usage”- Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
- Click Orders in the app’s menu.
- In the Plan box, read Invoices this month, for example 32 of 50. The Plan tile shows the date your count next resets.
The count changes color from 40, and turns red at 50. Invoice Falcon also emails your store’s email address when you’ve used half and 80% of your orders, and again when you reach the limit.
What happens at the limit
Section titled “What happens at the limit”When you reach 50, you see “You have reached your monthly limit of 50 invoices on the Free plan. Upgrade to the Pro plan for unlimited invoices.” when you try to:
- print, download or email an invoice for an order that hasn’t counted before;
- start a bulk print, download or email;
- send an invoice automatically. Invoice Falcon emails you once when this first happens in a month.
Orders you’ve already printed, downloaded or emailed before still work, so you can always reprint or resend them.
What customers will see
Section titled “What customers will see”Until your count resets, invoices for new orders aren’t emailed automatically. Customers who try to download a new invoice from their account see “No invoice is available for this order yet.”, and the link in the order confirmation email doesn’t open an invoice. Invoices they already received are not affected.
Remove the limit
Section titled “Remove the limit”- Click Upgrade to Pro in the Plan box on the Orders page. The Plans page opens.
- Click Start free trial on the Pro card.
- Click Approve on Shopify’s charge approval page.
The limit is lifted as soon as Pro is active. Upgrading doesn’t go back and send the automatic invoices that were blocked, so send those yourself. See Email invoices in bulk and Invoice Falcon pricing and plans.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”A new order didn't get its automatic invoice
Check Invoices this month on the Orders page. If it reads 50 of 50, automatic sending is paused until the reset date. Upgrade to Pro, or send the invoice yourself after the reset. See Send invoices automatically.
My count is higher than the invoices I sent
Customer downloads count too, from the order confirmation email link and the customer account button. Each order still counts only once a month.
Some orders failed in a bulk action
When you select all orders matching a filter, orders beyond your limit fail one by one. Open Bulk actions, click Details on the action, and check the Failed list. See Track your bulk actions.
The count didn't reset on the 1st
That’s expected. It resets on the day of the month you installed Invoice Falcon. The Plan tile shows the exact date.
Do I pay anything extra if I go over 50?
No. There are no overage charges. Invoices for new orders simply pause until the count resets or you upgrade.
Does reprinting an old invoice use up my limit?
No. An order counts once a month, and orders you’ve already printed, downloaded or emailed are never blocked.
Do draft order quotes count?
Yes. The limit covers orders and draft orders together, 50 in total.
If I downgrade from Pro, do the invoices I made on Pro count?
No. Only what you do on the Free plan counts. See Cancel or downgrade your plan.
Will my customers know I've hit the limit?
Not directly. They just don’t get a new invoice by email or download until the count resets or you upgrade.
