Add an invoice link to the order confirmation email

Add a Download Invoice link to Shopify's order confirmation email, so customers get their invoice with their receipt.

Last updated

Use this guide if you want customers to get their invoice from the email Shopify already sends when they place an order. By the end, every order confirmation email will have a link that downloads the customer’s invoice as a PDF.

  • This works on every plan. On the Free plan, each invoice a customer downloads this way counts toward your monthly limit of 50 orders. See How the monthly invoice limit works.
  • You paste a short piece of code into Shopify’s order confirmation template. You’ll need access to your Shopify admin’s Settings.
  • The link works for orders only, not draft orders or quotes.

A Download Invoice link in their order confirmation email, or the text you choose. Clicking it opens the invoice PDF for that order. To see an example, click See how it looks in the Order confirmation email section in Invoice Falcon.

The invoice uses your default template for orders. If the order doesn’t have an invoice yet, Invoice Falcon creates it when the customer clicks, even if automatic sending is off.

  1. Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
  2. Click Settings in the app’s menu.
  3. Click the Integrations tab.
  4. In the Order confirmation email section, type the link text you want in 1. Enter text for the download button. The default is “Download Invoice”.
  5. Hover over the code box under 2. Copy this code to your Order Confirmation email and click Copy. You see “Code copied to clipboard!”

The link text isn’t saved. If you come back later to copy the code again, type your text again first.

The code looks like this. Always copy it from the app, which fills in your store’s details in place of APP_ADDRESS and your-store.myshopify.com:

<!-- Invoice Falcon Email Code START -->
<table class='container' style='margin-bottom:25px'>
<tr>
<td>
<h4>
<a href='APP_ADDRESS/pdfs/{{ id }}.pdf?shopify_domain=your-store.myshopify.com&uuid={{ order_number }}'>
Download Invoice
</a>
</h4>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<!-- Invoice Falcon Email Code END -->

{{ id }} and {{ order_number }} are Shopify’s own order details. Shopify fills them in for each order, so leave them exactly as they are.

Step 2: Paste the code into Shopify’s order confirmation

Section titled “Step 2: Paste the code into Shopify’s order confirmation”
  1. In your Shopify admin, click Settings at the bottom left.
  2. Click Notifications, then Customer notifications.
  3. Under Order processing, click Order confirmation.
  4. Click Edit code.
  5. Paste the code where you want the link to appear in the email, for example just after the greeting.
  6. Click Save.

For a walkthrough, click Send invoice in Order Confirmation email under step 3 in Invoice Falcon to watch the video guide.

  1. Place a test order in your store using your own email address.
  2. Open the order confirmation email from Shopify.
  3. Click the link. The invoice PDF for that order opens.

Shopify’s notification preview shows the link, but it doesn’t point to a real order, so the link only works in a real order’s email.

The link opens a page saying Oops! Invoice not found

Check these in order:

  1. The code was pasted whole, with {{ id }} and {{ order_number }} unchanged. If in doubt, copy it again from Invoice Falcon and replace the old code.
  2. The link was clicked from a real order’s email, not Shopify’s preview.
  3. On the Free plan, you haven’t reached the monthly limit of 50 orders. At the limit, new invoices can’t be created until it resets.
The link shows the old text

Shopify still has the old code. Type the new text in Invoice Falcon, copy the code again, and replace the old code in Shopify’s Order confirmation template.

The link doesn't appear in the email

Open the Order confirmation template with Edit code and check that the code is there, from the START comment to the END comment, and that you clicked Save. If it is missing, paste it again just after the greeting and save.

Does this work for orders placed before I added the code?

No. Shopify adds the link to order confirmation emails sent after you save the template. Emails already sent don’t change.

Do I need automatic invoices turned on?

No. If an order has no invoice yet, Invoice Falcon creates it when the customer clicks the link.

Does it work for guest checkouts?

Yes. Anyone with the order confirmation email can open the invoice from the link, with or without a customer account.

Can customers also download invoices from their account?

Yes, with a separate setup. See Let customers download invoices from their account.
