Restore an earlier template version

Undo template changes by going back to a version saved earlier.

Last updated

Use this guide if a template change didn’t work out and you want the earlier look back. By the end, the template is back to a version you saved before, and invoices use it again.

  • A version is kept each time you save the template: from the visual editor, the code editor, the template’s name and defaults, or an AI change you apply.
  • Each template keeps its 15 most recent versions. Older ones are removed as you save new ones.
  • Adding or removing a logo doesn’t create a version, and Business details aren’t part of a template’s history, because they are shared by all templates.
  • Restoring changes how existing invoices look the next time they are printed, downloaded or sent, like any template save.
  • Version history is on every plan.

Restoring a version overwrites the current template with everything saved in that version:

  • the code and all visual editor settings, including labels, colors and fonts;
  • the template name;
  • which documents the template is the default for;
  • the invoice number settings, including Next invoice number if you number invoices in your own sequence.

The next invoice they receive or download uses the restored template. Invoice numbers already given to invoices don’t change.

  1. Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
  2. Click Templates in the app’s menu, then click the template’s name.
  3. Click More actions at the top of the page.
  4. Click Version history. The Version history window opens with the newest version at the top, marked Current.
  5. Click the version you want. Each one shows when it was saved and, under Changes:, which settings changed.
  6. Click Restore.

A Template restored successfully message confirms it. The template page now shows the restored version.

Labels make the right version easy to find later, for example “Before redesign”.

  1. In the Version history window, click Add label under the version.
  2. Type the label, up to 80 characters.
  3. Click Save label.

Changes made with the AI editor are labelled automatically with AI: and the start of your request.

  1. Check the Preview tab in the Edit template content section. If it isn’t the look you wanted, open Version history again and restore a different version.
  2. Click Templates in the app’s menu and check the Default for column is still right.
  3. If you use your own invoice number sequence, open the visual editor, click Order information, and check Next invoice number. See Set invoice numbers and prefixes.
No version history yet

The template hasn’t been saved since it was created. Versions start with your first save.

Restore is greyed out

You’ve selected the version marked Current, which is already the template. Select another version.

The version I need isn't in the list

Only the 15 most recent versions are kept, so older ones may be gone. Rebuild the change in the visual editor, or start again from a design. See Choose a template design.

The restored template still isn't right

Restore the version just before or after it. Each version’s Changes: line helps you find the save you’re looking for.

Another template stopped being the default after a restore

The restored version was the default for Orders or Draft orders, so it took that default back. Set the default again on the template you want. See Rename a template and set a default.

Invoice numbers repeat after a restore

Restoring can put Next invoice number back to an older value. Open the visual editor, click Order information, and set Next invoice number to one more than your last invoice number, then click Save changes.

Does restoring change invoices I already sent?

It changes how they look the next time they are printed, downloaded or sent. Their invoice numbers and order details stay the same.

Can I undo a restore?

Not directly, because restoring doesn’t add a new version. Before you restore, duplicate the template from More actions > Duplicate, so the copy keeps the look you have now.

Does restoring bring back a deleted template?

No. Version history belongs to each template and is only shown on that template’s page, so a deleted template can’t be opened or restored.

Does restoring bring back my old logo?

Not reliably, because logo uploads aren’t saved as versions. Check the logo after restoring and upload it again if needed. See Add your logo, colors and fonts.
