Show totals, discounts and shipping
Choose what prints in the totals under your items: subtotal, discounts, shipping, refunds and more.
Last updated
Use this guide if you want to control the totals block under the items on your invoices: the subtotal, discounts, shipping charges, refunds, the total in words and the total weight. By the end, customers see how their total was worked out, including any refund.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- These settings belong to one template. Change each template you use.
- Every setting here is available on every plan except the Pay now link, which needs the Pro plan.
- Changes also apply to invoices you already created, the next time they’re opened, printed, downloaded or sent.
- Tax rows are covered in Show tax details on invoices.
What customers will see
Section titled “What customers will see”The totals print on the right, under the items table, in this order:
- Subtotal.
- Discount, with a minus sign.
- Shipping.
- Duties, only when the order has duties.
- Tax.
- Total, followed by the amount in words if you turn it on.
- Refunded, with a minus sign, when the order has a refund.
- A Pay now button, while the order is unpaid.
Set it up
Section titled “Set it up”- Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
- Click Templates in the app’s menu.
- Click the template you want to change. The template page opens.
- In the Visual editor section, click Open visual editor.
- In the editor’s sidebar, under Content, click Order total information.
- Check the rows you want and uncheck the ones you don’t. Each group is described below.
- Click Save changes in the bar at the top of the editor.
Subtotal and discounts
Section titled “Subtotal and discounts”Under Order summary:
- Order subtotal prints the Subtotal row.
- Order discount reason adds the discount’s name in brackets after the discount amount, for example “Discount (SUMMER10)”.
- Show each discount separately prints one row per discount, each labelled with the discount’s name, instead of one combined row. Use it when an order often has more than one discount.
For discounts on each item, see Show product details on invoices.
Shipping charges
Section titled “Shipping charges”Under Shipping details, Order shipping prints the Shipping row with the shipping cost the customer paid at checkout. Orders with free shipping show 0.00.
Refund amount
Section titled “Refund amount”Under Payment details:
- Order refund amount prints a Refunded row under the total, with the amount refunded in Shopify. Refunded products also get a “Refunded” tag next to their name. A partly refunded product shows how many were refunded, for example “Refunded 1/2”.
- Refund reason prints the note you added to the refund in Shopify, as “Reason for credit”. It’s most useful on credit notes.
Amount in words and total weight
Section titled “Amount in words and total weight”Under Payment details:
- Amount in words prints the total in words under the Total row.
- Total weight prints the order’s total weight. It prints in the Payment Information section at the bottom, so Payment address or Payment method must also be on. See Show payment and shipping information.
Pay now link
Section titled “Pay now link”On the Pro plan, Pay now link adds a Pay now button under the totals that opens Shopify’s payment page for the balance due. It only shows while the order is unpaid. See Let customers pay with a Pay now link.
Check your setup
Section titled “Check your setup”- Look at the live preview on the right of the visual editor. It uses a sample order.
- Click Orders in the app’s menu and click an order that has a discount or a refund.
- In the Templates card on the right, select the template you changed.
- Check the totals in the invoice preview.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”A refund I made in Shopify doesn't show on the invoice
Check these in order:
- Order refund amount is checked on the template the invoice uses.
- Lock invoices once they’re issued is off in Settings > Compliance. When it’s on, refunds don’t change an issued invoice. Create a credit note instead.
- The invoice wasn’t changed with Edit invoice. Edited invoices stop updating from Shopify. Open the Other menu on the order page and click Regenerate to rebuild it, which replaces your edits.
The reason for credit doesn't print
The refund has no note in Shopify. The reason only prints when you added a note to the refund when you made it.
Total weight doesn't print
Total weight prints inside the Payment Information section. Turn on Payment address or Payment method under Payment information in the editor’s sidebar, then save.
The Pay now button doesn't show
The button needs the Pro plan, and it only shows while the order is unpaid. Once the order is paid, it disappears.
The invoice shows Shipping 0.00
The order had free shipping. To hide the row on every invoice from this template, uncheck Order shipping.
Do these settings change invoices I already created?
Yes. Existing invoices use the new settings the next time they’re opened, printed, downloaded or sent.
Will my customer see the refunded amount?
Yes, when Order refund amount is checked. The Refunded row shows under the total, so the customer sees both what they paid and what came back.
Can I show the shipping method name, like Express?
Not on the Standard design or the newer designs: they show the shipping cost only. The Classic design also lists the shipping method under the totals. See Choose a template design.
Can I rename Subtotal, Discount or Refunded?
Yes. Change them under Labels in the same editor. See Change labels and the date format.
Can I show the total in my customer's currency?
Yes, on the Pro plan. See Invoices in your customer’s currency.
