Let customers download invoices from their account
Add a Download invoice button to your customers' order pages in Shopify's customer accounts, in their language.
Last updated
Use this guide if you want customers to get their own invoices without emailing you. By the end, signed-in customers can open an order in their account, click Download invoice, and save the PDF.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- The button works with Shopify’s new customer accounts. It isn’t available in the legacy (classic) customer accounts.
- The setting is on every plan. On the Free plan, an order counts toward your monthly limit of 50 orders the first time a customer downloads its invoice, unless you already printed, downloaded or sent it. See How the monthly invoice limit works.
- Customers must be signed in, and the order must belong to their account. Orders placed as a guest, with no customer account linked to the order, can’t use the button.
- You set the button up once, in Shopify’s customer accounts editor. It then shows for every customer.
What customers will see
Section titled “What customers will see”- In their account, the customer opens Orders and picks an order, or opens the order’s action menu.
- They click Download invoice.
- A small window opens, titled Invoice, with the message “Your invoice … is ready to download.” and a Download invoice link.
- They click the link to open or save the PDF.
If the order has no invoice yet, Invoice Falcon creates it on the spot, even if you don’t send invoices automatically. If the invoice can’t be shown, for example on a guest order, the window says “No invoice is available for this order yet.”
You can change all of this wording, and translate it, with the Translations card, as described below.
Set it up
Section titled “Set it up”- Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
- Click Settings in the app’s menu.
- Click the Integrations tab.
- In the Customer Accounts section, on the Download invoice button card, click Add button. The Add Download Invoice Button window opens.
- Click Open Editor. Shopify’s customer accounts editor opens on the Orders page.
- In the editor, follow the steps the window lists:
- Find “Download Invoice” under Invoice Falcon in the left sidebar.
- Click the + (plus) icon next to it.
- When prompted, select “Orders”.
- Confirm the action appears in the preview.
- Click Save and come back here.
- Back in Invoice Falcon, wait while the window shows “Checking whether the extension was added”.
- When it shows Download invoice button activated, click Done.
The Orders page row on the card now reads Button is active. To change or remove the button later, click Change on that row to reopen Shopify’s editor.
Translate the download window
Section titled “Translate the download window”The Translations card sets the window’s wording for each customer language. Each customer sees the wording for the language they use in their account.
- On the Integrations tab, in the Translations card, click Add language.
- In the Add a language window, open the Language dropdown, pick a language, and click Add.
- On the new language row, click Edit.
- Fill in any of these fields:
- Invoice title, the window title (up to 50 characters).
- Download button text, the text on the button in the order menu and on the download link (up to 50 characters).
- Invoice ready message, the message above the link (up to 200 characters).
- Close button text (up to 50 characters).
- Click Save on that row. A Translation saved message appears.
Repeat for each language. To delete one, click Remove on its row.
A field you leave blank falls back to the wording set on the button in Shopify’s customer accounts editor, and then to the built-in English text. You don’t need Translate & Adapt for this wording: it lives only in Invoice Falcon.
Check your setup
Section titled “Check your setup”- Place a test order in your store while signed in to a customer account with your own email.
- Go to your store’s customer account, open Orders, and open the test order.
- Click Download invoice and check that the PDF opens.
- If you added a translation, view your customer account in that language and check the wording.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”The card still says Not set up yet
The button wasn’t saved in Shopify’s editor. Click Add button, then Open Editor, and make sure you added “Download Invoice” to the Orders page and clicked Save in the editor. Then return to Invoice Falcon and reload Settings.
Customers don't see Download invoice
Check that your store uses Shopify’s new customer accounts, and that the customer is signed in. The button only shows in the new customer accounts.
The window says No invoice is available for this order yet
Check these in order:
- The order is linked to the signed-in customer. Guest orders never show an invoice. Email those customers their invoice instead. See Email an invoice to a customer.
- On the Free plan, you haven’t reached your monthly limit. Past the limit, new invoices can’t be created for customers. See How the monthly invoice limit works.
- The invoice opens from the order page in Invoice Falcon. If it doesn’t, contact support from the chat in the app.
The window says We couldn't generate your invoice right now
The window couldn’t reach Invoice Falcon at that moment, for example because of a connection problem. Ask the customer to try again later.
The wording is in English for some customers
No translation exists for their language, so the default wording is used. Add their language in the Translations card. If you translated a field but it’s still in English, check that field isn’t blank on that language’s row.
Do I need to turn on automatic invoices for this to work?
No. If an order has no invoice yet, Invoice Falcon creates it when the customer clicks the button.
Which invoice does the customer get?
The same invoice you’d download from the order page in Invoice Falcon, with your template and any edits you made.
Does the translation change the invoice itself?
No. The Translations card only changes the download window. The invoice’s language is set separately. See Invoices in your customer’s language.
Can customers who checked out as guests download invoices?
No. The button only works for orders linked to the signed-in customer’s account. Email guest customers their invoice instead.
Can I add the invoice link to Shopify's order confirmation email too?
Yes, separately. See Add an invoice link to the order confirmation email.
