Rename a template and set a default

Give a template a clear name and choose which documents use it.

Last updated

Use this guide if you want to rename a template or choose which template is used for orders, draft orders or credit notes. By the end, every invoice, quote and credit note your customers get uses the template you picked.

  • Only one template can be the default for each document type. Making a template the default for Orders removes Orders from whichever template had it before.
  • Changing the default changes how existing invoices look the next time they are printed, downloaded or sent, because they are rebuilt with the new default template.
  • Packing slips have no default setting. They use your most recently created packing slip template.
  • If you number invoices in your own sequence, the sequence only runs on the template that is the default for Orders. See Set invoice numbers and prefixes.
Use this When
The Default for cell on the Manage templates page You only want to change the default. It saves as soon as you click.
General settings on the template page You also want to rename the template. Changes save when you click Save.

Every invoice, quote and credit note uses the default template for its type, whether it is sent automatically, emailed by you, or printed. Template names are never shown to customers.

  1. Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
  2. Click Templates in the app’s menu.
  3. In the template’s row, click the Default for cell (it shows None or the current defaults).
  4. Click Orders, Draft orders or Credit notes. Click a ticked item again to remove it.

The change saves right away.

Rename a template or set a default from the template page

Section titled “Rename a template or set a default from the template page”
  1. Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
  2. Click Templates in the app’s menu.
  3. Click the template’s name. The template page opens.
  4. In the General settings section, click Edit.
  5. Type the new name in Template name.
  6. Under Default for, tick Orders, Draft orders or Credit notes.
  7. Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.

The General settings summary now reads, for example, “Default for Orders and Draft orders”.

  1. Click Templates in the app’s menu and check the Default for column. Orders, Draft orders and Credit notes should each appear on exactly one template.
  2. Open an order from Orders, click Actions, then click Print. The invoice uses your default template for orders.
Another template lost its default

That’s expected. Each document type can have only one default, so setting it on one template removes it from the other.

An order printed from its page uses a different template

The Templates card on the order’s page decides which template you print or download from that page. It starts on the default each time you open the order, but another template may have been picked. Choose the template you want in the Templates card, then print again.

Name can't be blank

The Template name is empty. Type a name, then click Save.

Name has already been taken

Another template already has that name. Choose a different name and click Save.

Does changing the default change invoices I already created?

Yes, how they look. The next time an existing invoice is printed, downloaded or sent, it is built with the new default template. Its invoice number and order details stay the same.

What happens if no template is the default?

Invoice Falcon uses your most recently created invoice template for that document type. Set a default so you always know which one is used.

Can I set a default template for packing slips?

No. Packing slips always use your most recently created packing slip template. See Print packing slips.

Do customers see the template name?

No. The name is only for you inside the app.
