Edit templates with AI

Describe a change to your template in plain words, review it, and apply it.

Last updated

Use this guide if you’d rather describe a template change than look for the setting, for example “hide the SKU and make the title Tax Invoice”. By the end, you’ll have reviewed and applied the change, and your invoices will use it.

  • The AI editor needs the Pro plan. On the Free plan the text box and button are locked.
  • Apply Changes saves straight to the template. You don’t need to click Save changes, and Discard won’t take it back. Use Undo instead.
  • You can generate up to 20 changes per hour.
  • Like any template save, applied changes also show on existing invoices the next time they are printed, downloaded or sent.

For anything in the right-hand column, use the matching row in the editor’s sidebar. See Customize a template in the visual editor.

The same as any template change: the next invoice PDF they receive or download uses the updated template. Nothing changes until you click Apply Changes.

  1. Open your Shopify admin and click Invoice Falcon in the left menu.
  2. Click Templates in the app’s menu, then click the template’s name.
  3. In the Visual editor section, click Open visual editor.
  4. In the editor’s sidebar, under AI, click AI editor.
  5. Type what you want in the text box, for example Hide SKU, change accent color to red, rename title to Tax Invoice.
  6. Click Generate Changes. The list of proposed changes appears, and the preview shows Previewing AI-proposed changes.
  7. Check each change in the list. Each line shows the setting, its current value and the new value.
  8. Click Apply Changes to save them, or Cancel to throw them away.

After applying, Changes applied. appears with an Undo button. Click Undo to reverse the whole change.

Tips for good results:

  • Name the thing as it appears on the invoice: “Subtotal”, “Ship To”, “SKU”.
  • Ask for a few related changes at a time rather than a long list.
  • If the result isn’t right, click Cancel and rephrase.
  1. Look at the preview after applying. It now shows the saved template.
  2. Open a real order from Orders, click Actions, then click Print to see the change on a real invoice.
The text box and Generate Changes are greyed out

The AI editor needs the Pro plan. Click the lock icon next to AI editor to see the upgrade options. See Invoice Falcon pricing and plans.

No changes detected for this request

The AI couldn’t match your request to anything in the template, or asked for something it can’t change. Rephrase using the words shown on the invoice, or use the matching row in the editor’s sidebar.

Some changes couldn't be applied

Part of the request was applied and part wasn’t. Check the preview, then ask again for the missing part in different words.

Rate limit reached

You’ve generated 20 changes in the last hour. Wait a little and try again, or make the change yourself in the editor’s sidebar.

I clicked Discard but the AI change is still there

Applied AI changes are already saved, so Discard doesn’t remove them. Click Undo in the Changes applied. message, or restore an earlier version. See Restore an earlier template version.

Do I need to click Save changes after applying?

No. Apply Changes saves the template immediately. Other settings you changed by hand in the same session still need Save changes.

Can I undo an AI change later?

Yes. Each applied change is saved in the template’s version history, labelled with AI: and the start of your request. Open More actions > Version history on the template page and restore an earlier version.

Will an AI change affect invoices I already sent?

Yes, the next time those invoices are printed, downloaded or sent, like any template change. Their numbers and order details stay the same.

Can the AI change my layout?

Yes. It can edit the template code, shown as Template code: updated in the list of changes. Check the preview carefully before you apply a layout change.

How long can my request be?

Up to 2,000 characters. The counter under the text box shows how many you’ve used.
