Use this guide if you want to email an invoice to a customer yourself, for one order. By the end, the customer gets an email from your store with the invoice attached as a PDF.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- On the Free plan, emailing an invoice counts toward your monthly limit of 50 orders. Each order counts once, even if you also print it or email it again. See How the monthly invoice limit works.
- The order needs an email address, unless you type one in yourself with Review & send.
- To email many invoices at once, see Email invoices in bulk. To send every new invoice without doing anything, see Send invoices automatically.
Choose your setup
Section titled “Choose your setup”| Use this | When |
|---|---|
| Send email | You want to send the invoice to the customer’s email address with your usual email text. |
| Review & send | You want to check or change the address, or change the subject or message for this one email. |
| The envelope icon on the Orders list | You want to send with your usual text and default template without opening the order. |
What customers will see
Section titled “What customers will see”An email from your store with the invoice attached as a PDF. The subject and message are your invoice email text, unless you changed them in Review & send. To change your usual text, see Customize your invoice emails.
When you send from the order’s page, the PDF uses the template selected in the Templates sidebar. From the Orders list, it uses your default template for orders.

Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”The window says it will send to customer instead of an address
The order has no customer email address. Use Send > Review & send and type the address in Email(s).
Failed to send email. Please try again.
Check these in order:
- The order has an email address. If not, use Review & send and type one in.
- You haven’t reached the Free plan’s monthly limit. The message then mentions the limit of 50 invoices.
- If you send from your own domain, the sender address is still set and verified. See Change the sender address.
If it still fails, see Troubleshoot invoice emails.
Send email and Review & send show different addresses
Send email uses the email on the customer’s Shopify profile. Review & send starts with the email on the order itself. The two can differ, for example when the order was placed with a different contact email. Check the address in Review & send and correct it before sending.
Send me a BCC copy is greyed out
You haven’t set a copy address yet. Set one under Copies in the invoice email settings, which needs the Pro plan. See Send copies of invoice emails. Or use Send email and tick Send me a copy of the invoice, which lets you type any address.
The customer says they didn't get the email
Ask them to check spam, and check the address on the order. Then see Troubleshoot invoice emails.
Can I send the invoice to a different address than the one on the order?
Yes. Use Send > Review & send and type the address in Email(s).
Does changing the message in Review & send change my email template?
No. The changes apply to that one email. To change the text for every email, see Customize your invoice emails.
Can I email the same invoice again?
Yes. Send it as often as you need. It still counts as one order toward the Free plan limit.
Will the customer see my edits to the invoice?
Yes. The email attaches the current version of the invoice, including any changes you made with Edit invoice. See Edit an invoice.
Can I email quotes and credit notes the same way?
Yes. Open the draft order or credit note and use the same Send menu. For a credit note, use Review & send so you can see the address it goes to. See Send quotes for draft orders and Create credit notes.
